10 Places to Get Your Thanksgiving Pies in Minneapolis
Pie is at the heart of many Thanksgiving traditions. Pumpkin. Apple. Buttery pecan. No matter your pie preferences, these local bakeries in Minneapolis are ready to provide the sweetness for your table this Thanksgiving.
Want to avoid the stress of preparing a Thanksgiving feast this year? Check out these Thanksgiving dine-in and takeout options.
1. Turtle Bread Company
With three locations in Minneapolis, Turtle Bread Company is a neighborhood staple for many locals. They’re known for artisan breads, breakfast bites and homey pastries, but they also have a standout fall and winter pie menu available September – March. Choose between the Thanksgiving classics: an apple pie, a bourbon pecan and classic pumpkin pies. For those who like a little tartness, order a pear cranberry pie instead.
2. The Buttered Tin
Pies from The Buttered Tin will definitely make your Thanksgiving memorable. Their French apple, pumpkin and pecan bourbon pies come with lots of filling encased in buttery, flaky crust. For something still seasonal but nontraditional, order the cherry almond pie or the s’mores pie for the kids’ table and any potential picky eaters. You can pick up these pies already baked and ready to go or take and bake a freshly frozen pie at home to serve hot out of the oven. All pie orders need to be placed at least 48 hours in advance.
3. Sarah Jane's Bakery
This family-owned shop in Northeast Minneapolis specializes in just-sweet-enough pies with incredibly balanced flavors. No matter which pie you choose — anything from classic apple to key lime — each one is baked with care and lots of butter (the most important part, of course). Place your orders via email or by calling the bakery.
4. Black Walnut Bakery
This Minneapolis bakery is reminiscent of a European café. Most who go to Black Walnut Bakery enjoy a pastry and latte at a small table in the sunshine. But they have an excellent special-order menu for cakes and pies, too. Here, you must get the pumpkin pie. It’s deliciously creamy and has the flakiest, buttery crust. They also make an amazing pecan pie and apple crisp. Orders must be placed 24-48 hours in advance.
5. Honey & Rye
Blocks away from the Linden Hills neighborhood in South Minneapolis is Honey & Rye. On weekends, the line is usually out the door with people clamoring to get fresh pastries and coffee. Their seasonal pies are also raved about. For a twist on a traditional favorite, order the apple pie with cinnamon oat crumble. Or go with the pumpkin pie, which is served with generous dollops of whipped cream and sprinkled with candied pecans. Preorders are now open.
6. Hot Hands Pie & Biscuit
Since “pie” is in its name, you can’t go wrong with any of Hot Hands Pie & Biscuit’s Thanksgiving options. It’ll be hard to narrow down your decision here because there’s so much to choose from. They make an expert pecan pie, which is baked with a unique Nilla Wafer cookie crust. Their pumpkin pie is creamy, but not too sweet. For extra sweet, try the sweet potato pie, which comes topped with marshmallows, or a toasted vanilla pie (This is the usually the first pie to sell out!). Hot Hands Pie is in St. Paul, but they’re worth the trip. Pie orders can be picked up November 21-23.
7. Patisserie 46
Get a masterful pecan pie at Patisserie 46. It's flavored with bourbon, is encased in delicate French pastry and topped with delicate chocolate leaves. People who aren't fans of pie should try their other dessert option: a pie-cake hybrid. The “Lost Eden” cake has apple-cinnamon compote and velvety cinnamon Bavarian cream between layers of vanilla sponge, all atop a crispy hazelnut crumble.
8. Fletcher's Ice Cream
You may be thinking: "What does ice cream have to do with Thanksgiving?" At Fletcher's, their holiday pies are made with the creamy frozen dessert. We have a feeling the kid's table will especially love an ice cream pie. Choose between the pumpkin cheesecake pie, the Charlie Brown pie (chocolate ice cream with swirls of peanut butter), an ube pie (ube ice cream with a gluten free and vegan crust) or the hot chocolate pie (hot chocolate ice cream topped with toasted marshmallows and chocolate shavings). Order now, and pick up your pie November 21 or 22.
Vegans need pie, too...
9. Lutunji's Palate
Known for authentic Southern cobbler, Lutunji’s Palate has formulated a vegan version of the buttery crust for which cobbler is known. Coconut oil is to thank, and it might just taste better than the original version. This Thanksgiving, order a family pan or a party pan of their pecan cobbler, but we won’t judge if you want to order the peach cobbler instead — that’s Lutunji’s Palate’s claim to fame.
10. Chowgirls
Rustic and crisp, this vegan caramel apple crumble is hand-crafted with scratch ingredients. If you show up to a vegan's doorstep with this pie, you'll forever be on the guest list. Order the caramel apple crumble for pickup or delivery.
